Nursing in California

The state of California, located on the west coast of the United States, is one of the most sought-after states in the country for individuals and families looking to relocate and start a new life. It is the most populous state in the country, and boasts one of the largest economies in the world. California’s population stands at over 38 million residents.

California is famous for its largely diverse ecosystem. Residents can enjoy vast beaches on one side of the state and then drive to the mountains within four hours to hit the slopes in the Sierra Nevada Mountains. Some notable landmarks include the Golden Gate Bridge, Big Sur National Park and Yosemite National Park.

Currently, Los Angeles is the largest city by population, with an estimated 3 million people living within its borders. It is also one of the most expensive places to live in the country, with cost of living being 50 percent higher than the national average. Other densely populated areas of California include the San Francisco Bay Area and Orange County.

The Outlook For Future Nurses in California

Registered nurses in California who have obtained a bachelor’s degree have a much better chance of obtaining full time employment when they graduate then those without a four year degree. Employment in the nursing sector in California is expected to grow by as much as 36 percent through 2020, largely because of the growing amount of baby boomers who are retiring.

Besides major hospitals, registered nurses are also needed in outpatient centers, home healthcare networks and private practices.

Financial Aid in California

Nursing students in California have a variety of financial aid options to choose from. The most common form of financial aid is called a state-based grant. State-based grants are given to students by California to help them finish their college education. These types of grants are normally given to those who meet specific income and grade point average requirements. Merit-based grants are awarded to students who have achieved high academic performance in high school and who meet low family income requirements. Both types of financial aid can be used by individuals who enter college as a nursing major.
