Online Nursing Degree Guide

(source)

Nursing is an honored profession and important to the collective health of the country. This is echoed by the fact that the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) estimates that there will be over a million new nursing jobs of all types between 2012 and 2022. If you are interested in a career in nursing, or wish to further your existing nursing education, you may be interested in online nursing certificates and degree programs. Such online nursing programs can save you both time and money — especially if you are already working as a nurse.

However, trying to find and compare online degrees and certificates is a considerable effort, as no standard exists for presenting online degree information on college Web sites. We’ve tried to make it easier for you by doing some of the legwork and aggregating a selection of the most affordable (by average yearly net price, as reported to NCES – National Center for Education Statistics).

Schools have been organized in alphabetical order and presented in small blocks across the alphabet for convenience. Each school’s nursing programs have been summarized, along with a partial list of curriculum courses for some or all of the programs. You can use the information here to narrow your search for a suitable online nursing degree, and reduce the time and effort. In some cases, you may need to contact an admissions counselor for further program details, if the school’s Web site does not provide what you need.

Notes:

  • Programs that are listed by colleges/ universities as being fully/ 100% online may still have some in-person requirements, such as start/end of semester meetups or final exams. In the latter case, a student not living close to the college in question will likely have a choice of places local to them where they can complete their exam. In-person practicums are also common for nursing programs, and students will typically have healthcare environments local to them from which to choose where to complete their clinical work.
  • Programs listed here include both those that are partly online (hybrid) and fully online.
  • Online/remote courses can be either synchronous or asynchronous. The former has the requirement that students attend classes live, either online via a Web browser or remotely, possibly via remote video feed or closed-circuit television, as the case may be. (Note: remote video/TV is a less common option.)
  • Degree-completion programs are typically at the bachelor’s level and allow for previous academic credits, such as for an existing associate’s degree, to be used towards requirements. An example is the RN-to-BSN program, which is fairly common in nursing. Some institutions also offer an RN-to-MSN program.
  • Accreditation of programs vary by institution and can change from time to time. Please check institutional/ program accreditation before applying, as not doing so may affect your ability to transfer between institutions and/or to receive financial aid.
  • Because of federal requirements for online education, some state boards of education protocols may mean that you cannot receive credit for an academic program offered by an institution from specific other states. Always check if you are eligible before applying to an institution.
  • Since this online degree guide for nursing programs lists a mix of online and hybrid programs, most of which have practicums/ clinical work, we chose to list the average yearly net price per college/ university. NCES defines this as the average cost for the last reporting year for an undergrad student, after financial aid has been factored in. This includes all expenses – tuition, fees, books, cost of living. Note that because of this definition, net price can change from year to year.
  • Some institutions have special fees for online courses, while others charge less than for on-campus attendance. The net price is only a guideline.
  • For graduate program costs, please consult each institution’s Web site.
  • COLLEGES: Please contact us if a program is either listed in error or no longer available.

Online Nursing Degree Overview

Online degree programs suit not only second-career aspiring nurses (about to enter the industry for the first-time but working elsewhere) and new nursing students, but also currently working nurses wanting to upgrade their education. With modern technologies, even a physically-oriented career such as nursing can be taught online or via other remote means, such as live TV or satellite feeds. Practicums can often be completed in healthcare environments local to the student. For first-time aspiring nurses not in another career, an associate’s degree or diploma in nursing is the starting point. However, these are not as commonly available online compared to bachelor’s or graduate nursing programs.

Online Nursing Certificate Programs

Nursing students will potentially encounter two categories of certificates: (1) academic certificate programs, where credits may count towards degrees; and (2) professional industry-recognized certification/ licensing/ registration. Preparation for exams of the latter could be available as an academic certificate program. Academic nursing certificate programs are more likely to be at the graduate rather than undergraduate level, and sometimes require at least a master’s in nursing for admission.

Online Associate’s Degree in Nursing

Of the schools covered above, online associate’s degrees in nursing are rather rare, with only a handful of nursing schools offering such programs. So for the present time, it’s likely that a first-time aspiring nurse will have to take a traditional on-campus nursing program at the associate’s or diploma level. However, this can usually be followed up with an RN-to-BSN type of degree-completion program, and in some cases RN-to-MSN.

Online Bachelor’s in Nursing

A bachelor’s degree in nursing is one of the more frequent types of online nursing degree types, especially the “RN to BSN” degree-completion programs. These programs are designed to allow currently licensed RNs who hold a diploma or associate’s degree in nursing to study for a BSN (BS in Nursing) while holding down their nursing job. The net outcome is that they can progress in their career and be able to work and pay for it, simultaneously.

Online Nursing Master’s Degree

Master’s degrees in nursing are typically an MSN (Master of Science in Nursing), possibly with a choice of tracks/ specializations. They can also be “transition” degrees, such as an “RN to MSN”, in which current RNs with an associate’s degree or diploma in nursing can obtain both a BSN and an MSN as part of a joint academic program. Having a Master’s in Nursing opens up numerous advanced career opportunities, including educator, executive/ administrator, advanced practice and more. Additional professional certification may be part of the effort.

Online Nursing Doctoral Degree

The most common type of nursing doctorate is the DNP (Doctor of Nursing Practice), although there are PhD programs as well. The DNP degree typically offers students with an MSN the opportunity to further their career with one of several Nurse Practitioner specializations.

Nursing Classes Online

In addition to certificate and degree programs, some nursing schools offer individual courses online that cover nursing topics but are not part of a certificate or degree program. These courses occasionally serve currently practicing nurses for CE (Continuing Education). In some cases, these individual online courses are available to associate’s degree level nursing students, even if the degree program is not officially online.
